My Story
Painting is a form of storytelling that allows me to combine what I see with how I feel. This emotional connection is a critical element that has allowed me to portray everything from a fruit seller in Barcelona, to clouds scuttling over a Central Alberta canola field, to street musicians playing on a corner in New Orleans.
I work in oils, which I love because of their richness, depth and flexibility. To begin, I create an underlying structure for my painting by dividing the canvas into sections based on colour, light, temperature and intensity. Once I’m comfortable with the structure, I begin to add layers of paint to build a rich base that allows me to define objects or figures with my brush strokes, pallet knife, cloth, or fingers. Typically, I work out of my studio using photographs I’ve taken — another passion of mine. However, recently I have been painting plein air, which adds a whole new element of challenge due to changing light, curious bystanders and, of course, the odd bug or two. |
